Here it is, the promised fest-related post!
So when I first came up with the idea for a jukebox-related casual fest, my idea was that there would be regular prompt posts--once a month or so--with a random song, or a handful of random songs, chosen from past Jukebox tagsets as the prompt. People could write stories or draw art or whatever based on the featured song, and post it as a reply to the prompt post and/or to a collection on AO3 as well as in their own spaces, and it would highlight some of the songs that people have nominated and requested over the years, and keep the spirit of Jukebox in our hearts year round, and it would be a fun community thing to see many different takes on the same song. Call this the Jukebox Shuffle model.
But then I thought, maybe a less frequent event--say, once a year, approximately opposite the Jukebox exchange--might generate more concentrated enthusiasm. If we did a more traditional prompt fest, where people could submit prompts consisting of a song and maybe a word or phrase about what sort of fill they'd be looking for, that might have more community interaction that would serve as a spur to people's creativity. And people could give any songs they wanted as prompts, which would be in the Jukebox spirit of discovering and sharing music, as well as maybe giving people new ideas about songs they'd want to nominate and request and create for in the next round of the exchange. Call this the Put Another Dime in the Jukebox model.
So, the questions are as follows:
1) Would you be interested in some sort of Jukebox-related casual fest?
2) Would you be more interested in the Shuffle or Dime model, or something in between the two, or something entirely different?
3) When would you be most able to participate? If it's going to be a once a year event, approximately what dates would work best?

YES!
2) Would you be more interested in the Shuffle or Dime model, or something in between the two, or something entirely different?
BOTH!
I like the "prompt recycle" aspect of Shuffle, but, on the other hand, Dime means new and exciting, not yet seen/heard canons.
3) When would you be most able to participate? If it's going to be a once a year event, approximately what dates would work best?
Between August and October, perhaps, but any time of year is Jukebox time, to my mind.

3) Any time works for me.

Date: 2022-06-23 11:48 pm (UTC)2) I’d probably be a little more interested in the dime model, since I already have several monthly/weekly prompt comms I (fail to) keep up with. If there’s enough steady participation then the shuffle model can be really fun, but if it starts to be only a few people then it can lose momentum.
3) The whole year is busy so probably any time (though maybe avoiding the end/beginning of the year).
Question: with either structure, would vids also be acceptable fills? I could definitely see getting inspired to create a vid with cool new music.
For the dime option, would there be an expectation that fills would be gifted to the prompter, or would it be more of a “here’s a prompt for inspiration” type of thing? I’d personally be more interested in the latter.

Date: 2022-07-05 06:37 pm (UTC)I'd love to see vids as fills, but I guess it depends what you're envisioning here. In the exchange, the rule has generally been that the songs/videos themselves are the canon that the creation should be based on, and no knowledge of outside canons should be necessary. So if you're thinking of fanvids to other canons using the prompted songs, that might not be in the spirit of the community. On the other hand, if you're thinking of creating sort of "original works" fanvids, that you wouldn't need knowledge of other canons in order to appreciate, that would be incredibly cool and welcome. Now that I"m thinking about it, I remember discussions a few years ago about whether to include other mediums than fic as gifts, and ultimately it was decided to yes include art and podfic but not vids, for exactly these sorts of reasons--but if you're interested in creating vids I think the fest might be a good opportunity for proof of concept.
I am leaning towards saying that gifting your creation to the prompter would be optional but not required or expected, but it is something to think about, and I think you make a good point about making the expectations clear upfront. The main issue I'm seeing here, beyond whether you click the "this work is a gift" box if you decide to post to AO3, is DNWs--if a prompt is simply for inspiration, there's no need to create something that avoids things that the prompter doesn't want, because it's not for them. On the other hand, if a fill is considered a gift, it is reasonable to expect that the creator should avid things the prompter doesn't want (in practice, I have rarely seen people list DNWs in prompt fests, but I also haven't seen all the prompt fests ever, or even most of them.)
So yeah, short answer: good questions, and I'll have to think about them some more, and probably talk it over with my co-mod and stuff. (If you have any further thoughts feel free to leave them here too.)

Date: 2022-06-24 12:17 am (UTC)2) Probably Dime? Although I like the idea of the Shuffle model, I worry that it would lose momentum (and become so routine as to be no longer fun?)
3) I'm trying to think of times of year that aren't loaded down with other things...I feel like any time of year except November/December would be okay for me, but factoring in other holidays that happen leading up to those, it might be nice to do like, January or February? Enough time before the Jukebox Exchange that it won't feel like too much at once, and also it might get us thinking about songs to nominate for the exchange.

Date: 2022-07-02 09:53 am (UTC)Shuffle sounds to me like a spin-off community, and as well as attracting previous Jukebox participants, it could pull in interest from the crowd who offer/request original works in exchanges or from people don't do exchanges at all but like to have regular creative prompts for their writing or other artistic responses. It seems like it would have a vibe a bit like fan-flashworks. I've always felt that Jukebox has a really special niche because of how it offers things to writers who come from more of a lit fiction/creative writing place as well as people who come from fan spaces, and Shuffle sounds like it leans more in the creative writing direction (while not excluding/alienating fannish creators).
Dime sounds like it would also be fun and rewarding, but it would take less effort to get it going and it would be more successful at feeling casual. It would also be a true fest, and after 10 years of running an EXCHANGE on a comm named FEST (look - plain 'jukebox' was taken), actually hosting a fest here seems very suitable. And I really think it would be complementary to the exchange part, since as you say, people could prompt with no tradeoffs (no "but if I request X I might get a gift for that instead of Y") and creators could consume new music at will and turn prompts over in their heads at leisure.
I think Dime doesn't have to be run in this DW community, but it could be, because fests don't require that many posts in a row. Shuffle maybe couldn't be.
For your questions -
1/2) Realistically for myself, Shuffle is the kind of thing I'd be excited about the existence of, but I would never write a fill for. Dime I might write a fill or two for.
3) Sept-Oct and Dec-Jan are very hard for me personally. Other months are better. I would not want my opinions to carry a lot of weight on dates, though, see above.
