Welcome to the Dime in the Jukebox Fest, a prompt fest for fanworks based on songs and music videos! Have fun, and feel free to promote it on your journal/community/tumblr/discord server/whatever if you want. You can copy the code in this box wherever HTML applies:

Rules

1) Leave a song or a music video as a prompt. Please include a listening/watching link. Links to the lyrics (if any) and translations of the lyrics (if they are not in English) are appreciated but not required. You may also include a short phrase, such as a quote from the lyrics or something that particularly interests you about the song/video, as an additional prompt; this is optional but not required. One prompt per comment. Leave as many prompts as you like.

Here's a possible template for prompting:

2) Reply to other people’s prompts with fanworks. All mediums of fanworks are welcome! But please create the fanwork about the prompted song/video only; no other fandom knowledge should be necessary in order to appreciate the work. Exception: if you are making fanvids, a vid to the prompted song for any fandom is considered an acceptable fill.

Hey!

This is just a heads-up that this year's Dime in the Jukebox Fest will be opening for prompts and fills on Sunday, February 18th. Crank up your playlists and start thinking of some prompts!

This is the post for last year's fest, if you want a reminder of what it is, or the rules, or if you just want some inspiration or whatever.

Hello, everyone!

So, back in July, we discussed holding a more casual fest in this space, partly as a run-up to the exchange, to help people brainstorm and find more music to request and offer when it comes around, but mostly because more music-based fanworks are always better.

And now I can announce: the Dime in the Jukebox Fest will be opening for prompts and fills right here on this community on Feb 15th!

There will be more detailed rules posted at the time, but the basic idea is, leave prompts in the form of a song, and, optionally, a short phrase; fill prompts with any sort of fanwork your heart desires.

And now for the question about vids:

In the Jukebox Exchange, gifts have been required to be only about the requested song(s), with no crossovers with other fandoms allowed. Basically the idea was that the focus should be on the songs, and that people should be able to enjoy the stories and art with no other knowledge than having listened to them. And that is still going to be the rule going forward for the Dime in the Jukebox Fest. However, we're considering making an exception for fanvids, so that if anyone wants to fill a prompt with a fanvid for the prompted song, they can make it for any fandom they like.

There are a few reasons for this:

1) It's very hard to make basically an original works fanvid (although if anyone wants to make one, we'd love to see it!)

2) The nature of the medium means that there will be a certain amount of focus on the song and interpreting the song, regardless of the fandom the vid is for

3) Since vidding is a very labor-intensive medium, we don't expect people to post so many vids that they will significantly change the tone of the fest, and

4) Some people expressed interest.

So we decided to throw the question to the community: what do you think? Should we allow fanvids for outside fandoms for the Dime in the Jukebox fest? Leave a comment with your thoughts!
