This has always been one of my favorite Tom Waits songs. The whole atmosphere is weird and horrific, with imagery of slavery and death.

- The POV of one of people mentioned: Everett Lee, the drunken criminal/prisoner, or Saginaw Calinda and the old run-down farm. What are their stories?

- The POV of the narrator. Who the hell is telling the stories of this old barn and the horrible things that happened there? I’ve always thought they might be a smuggler, choosing not to use the barn as a stash house, and maybe passing that info to someone else, but I really do not know.

There seems to be a division between apparent good and evil here, with the narrator's group desperately casting themselves as not like those other ones. But the lines are blurring and slipping. There's also a sense of seduction with "They will suck you down to the other side," but I hear a bitterness or even condemnation about that.

- Fantasy, blood magic, seduced by power, corruption all sound fun here. Do our heroes fall all the way? Do some of them hold onto their righteousness?

- I would love to know more about the story we get bits of in the video. My biggest question has always been about how the angel murder story connects with The Fly homage bits. Is any or all of this real? Is some of it metaphor? Or a bad trip? Mutants, science experiments, angels and demons: any of these would be fun.

Two Characters in Search of a Country Song - The Magnetic Fields (song)

What I love about this song is how both detailed and vague it is - there’s a lot there to think about with these characters and what exactly they’re getting up to while on the road. The amount of the allusions in the song gives a lot of evocative hints about the nature of their relationship and why they’re traveling but never gives you anything truly concrete. (I’m particularly fond of the “You were Daniel Webster, I was the devil himself” lyric - it’s such an intriguing line and I want to know more about these two!)

I absolutely love the lyricism of this song, the way it flows more like a stream-of-conscious poem than a straightforward story, and her singing really sells the emotion of it all. I have a lot of ideas about what this song means and might be conveying, but I’m *very* interested in what someone else takes away from it, and how that might lend itself to a story. I will say that I have always felt that there’s a lot of regret and longing in this song, as if it’s some kind of goodbye.

Prompts: There is such an ethereal, eerie beauty about this song! It's about losing a loved one and carrying on with life, of course, but there could be so many other layers of meaning here. Perhaps there is a supernatural element at play - maybe the departing loved one is a spirit or deity who has guided and protected the narrator, but has now decided to return to their realm, having come to the conclusion that the narrator is strong and powerful enough to to stand on her own now? How does the narrator handle her new powers and create the life she wants for herself? Perhaps she now too is a goddess or other magical being, but is having trouble accepting that she's no longer mortal? How does she come to accept her new self, and her new abilities, and grow stronger?

Or maybe the narrator is speaking to the spirit of a dead loved one, seeking some sort of closure? Wanting one last precious moment before saying goodbye forever? Sort of bittersweet, but ultimately happy as the departed loved one gives blessings for the narrator's new life, and points out all that the narrator has to live for - a child, beloved pets, a goal or quest?

Perhaps the giant they thought they were going to gun down turned out to be a mother protecting her young, or a wise elder, or a curious youngster? Prompts: Ever since I was young, I have found this song really haunting. Who was Carrie and why did she disappear? Has she perhaps some supernatural abilities she's discovered in order to give the narrator of the song the slip? Perhaps the narrator of the song, who can be any gender, isn't the innocent party they're presenting themselves as - a line like "they young wear their freedom like cheap perfume" seems quite judgemental and liable to be spoken by someone who wants to curtail that freedom... and why do the people the narrator is asking for help seem reluctant to tell them where Carrie went - do they really not know anything, or do they sense something isn't right? Perhaps the narrator is an abusive parent or partner, or a cult leader whose favorite follower has seen the light and run away from the cult (perhaps with someone who helped her - a woman who's now her lover perhaps?) Maybe, if Carrie does have some kind of powers, the narrator wants to control her and claim these for themselves? I'd like things to end happily for Carrie, but otherwise go where you will with this... it would be fascinating to see what happens from Carrie's point of view, too!
