Welcome to Jukebox 2018! This is a fanworks gift exchange in which art, fic, and podfic is created about songs and music videos.

Canon nominations will occur during 20-30 March this year. You can nominate 7 songs or music videos (plus potential bonus round, see below). The rules about what can be nominated can be found here and haven't changed from last year.

Please use this post or its LiveJournal equivalent to discuss what you're thinking of nominating! See also the past brainstorming tag.

Directory
For fun, here's a directory of the songs and music videos that were nominated and requested in previous years.

2013
Tag set | Tables of canons: A-L, by song; M-Z, by song| Requests

2014
Tag set | Tables of canons: LJ, by song; LJ, by artist; DW, by song; DW, by artist | Requests

2015
Tag set | Tables of canons: by song; by artist | Requests

2016
Tag set | Tables of canons: by song; by artist | Requests

2017
Tag set | Tables of canons: by song; by artist | Requests

Bonus nominations round
At the end of nominations, if I have enough time, I will ask for further nominations suggestions - these must be for songs & music videos that were nominated in previous years. This is in addition to your 7 nominations.

Sign-ups changes
I am making two changes to sign-ups this year.

First, requests will be visible throughout the sign-up period.

Second, I am enabling the optional details field in the Offers section of the sign-up. These details will be visible only to me and you - not to other participants. You can use this field to give me further information about your matching preferences, if you want. You don't have to use this field. I will read and make note of your preferences but may not be able to follow them - my first priority is to ensure that everyone has a recipient based on the fandoms and media they have offered.

Talking Heads, "(Nothing but) Flowers"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=068AFYvd58E
https://genius.com/Talking-heads-nothing-but-flowers-lyrics

I love this weird song. It's post-apocalyptic from the narrator's point of view, but everyone else around them is in a bucolic utopia. I'm passionate about cities and sympathize a lot with the narrator, but I could see a story in this setting go in any direction.

Information Society, "I Love It When..."
https://youtu.be/uEXdUVqRMns?t=3m45s
https://genius.com/Information-society-i-love-it-when-lyrics

This 2007 throwback to INSOC's '80s/'90s heyday feels extremely cyberpunk to me. Very little is said; much is implied. The chorus is totally incongruous with the verses. It leaves me wanting to know more about what links all of these places and events and feelings together.

They Might Be Giants, "Pet Name"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBPOkURJxg0
http://tmbw.net/wiki/Lyrics:Pet_Name

The band says this song "is about a slightly sleazy couple with a tenuous relationship to each other and a suspect relationship to the world." There's so much potential here for slice-of-life stories, the seeds of destruction planted in the meet-cute, possible futures, strange and surreal AUs... nothing is ever literal in a TMBG song, so I take that as license to run wild with whatever ideas it inspires.

Marc Cohn, "Paper Walls"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C28kLsBaJZE
https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/marccohn/paperwalls.html

I'm fascinated by this song, which trails away right as it's getting to what should be the heart of it. What does the narrator say on the phone? What happens after the woman in room 502 opens the door? Do they sob on each other about their breakups? Do they have great sex, or terrible unsatisfying sex? Do they go on a road trip together? Do they have a wild "how we met" story to tell at their wedding? What do the last lines of the song mean? And there's plenty of room to interpret the characters just about any way.

I was thinking of at least nominating Dua Lipa’s “New Rules” and Paramore’s “Rose Colored Boy” music videos. Not decided on the other nominations, but I’m only thinking of nominating music videos this year, if that’s okay.

What happens if you put a song through google translate and sing the results?

Be Prepared - Malinda Kathleen Reese & Jonathan Young
https://youtu.be/wT09O3tqaT4

A king who will starve himself for his subject, promises interesting new products and religious educators, and concerns himself with the problems in Latin America and the large thermal fog.

Total Eclipse of the Heart - Malinda Kathleen Reese

I believe this is about being in love with a monster with extremely sharp eyes.

I'm just debating if I'm going to nominate all my slots as her different songs or just limit myself to a few, but these ones are locked in.

seriously tempted to just repost my yuletide letter for jukebox, tbh

which is to say

Mary Mary - SJ Tucker (Song)
Mother of the Crows - Seanan McGuire (Song)
Peace & Love Inc. - Information Society (Song) or Peace & Love Inc. - Information Society (Music Video) (probably music video, but then I'd have to pay attention to the visuals and rework my prompt accordingly, instead of letting the music video kinda just be there as aesthetic inspiration to someone working on a fic based on the song)

four more nom slots, though, shame to waste them...

apparently this is too deep thought for my current state of health, though? bah

I'm thinking about nominating "Eurydice" by Sleepthief, either for the song or music video or both:

(CW for video: snakes, suicide)

https://youtu.be/0PrDapteYVk

I'm not sure what else. I'll probably go back to some of my favorites from previous years, and I'll probably want to bring in at least one Classical art song.

ETA:

Some other things I'm thinking about, though it's not solid yet:

Roundtable Rival (music video) by Lindsey Stirling is always a good one (Steampunk Western bank robbery and music duels with guitars and violins instead of pistols!)
https://youtu.be/jvipPYFebWc

Stand My Ground (music video) by Within Temptation (some kind of summoning (or unsummoning?) ritual in a drowning city)
https://youtu.be/4sCkAvh50Vs

Egil Saga (music video) by Faun (some kind of quest involving rune magic?)
video: https://youtu.be/6oYmc9WTdSs

Svarta rosor (song) - Jean Sibelius (Someone has a tree of black roses growing in their heart, either literally or metaphorically)

I've been watching Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and thus my listening to classic rock has gone up a 100%.

Some songs I'm specifically feeling:

Tusk - Fleetwood Mac (sinister march band! complicated love!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7U7XtYeq8c

Dirty Deeds Done Dirty Cheap - AD/DC (scummy hitmen/fixers, debts comin' due)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onE43h_TUUY

That's The Way - Led Zepplin (very soft gay environmental love story)

Still dithering on a full list, but Mortal City by Dar Williams for sure. It's my favourite ever winter song and it came on music shuffle while I was watching the snow through the window just now, so I'm taking that as some sort of sign :D It's not on youtube, but is on spotify.

Really looking forward to this exchange!

I’m still working on my final list but I have three definites so far:

Acid Rain – Lorn (Music Video)
YouTube / Lyrics
Warnings: blood, car crashes, death
I find this video fascinating. There’ll be many interpretations of it I’m sure but, for me, its symbolic of death and passing over. The cheerleaders involved in the crash are dying; the dances through the empty diner, led by the weakening driver, are their crossing over, their final fight. After their last dance together, the driver succumbs to her wounds alone.

Zolita – Holy (Music Video)
Youtube / Lyrics
Warnings: hanging, death, forced vomiting
The video tells the story of a group of girls oppressed by their patriarchal school. The main character, Zolita, rebels against the school’s values and forms a secret feminist cult. Her classmate, Edie, who notices Zolita and her lover Lilith escaping classes and doing things they shouldn’t, tells the headmaster. When the cult is discovered, Zolita sacrifices herself and is hanged while Lilith, and the rest of the school, is forced to watch.

Just – Radiohead (Music Video)
YouTube / Vimeo (better quality) / Lyrics
It’s a question that’s been speculated on for decades: why is the man in this music video lying down? The video’s director has said that revealing what the man says would “deaden the impact”, which I agree with, but I also think it’d be interesting to explore something he might have said.

Ooh, optional details in Offers? I'm looking forward to the results of this experiment.

Stuff that I'm thinking about beneath. What's beneath is hopefully coherent first impressions on what prompts they could support.

Je danse avec les dieux
lyrics & transl
It's a happy song, and I'm on a I-need-happiness kick right now. It feels like an "I've acheved victory after a long battle!" song, and I'm drawn to the whole dancing with the wind thing, and "I draw the universe as I please".

Stardust - Delain
lyrics
Bring me to life / Bring me the starlight / Bring me the sun and moon / Release this star tonight – and now I'm thinking about a science fiction generation ship thingy and also necromancy. The song itself is beautiful, and considerably less dark than the lyrics.

Into the Heart of Danger - Battle Beast
lyrics
A straightforwardish power-up you-can-do-it anthem, though stuff like "you get stronger every time you fall" gives interesting hooks for some sort of adaptive programming cyborg.

Far Far Away - Battle Beast
lyrics
Another uplifting one! I think it's about wanderlust plus success? In any case, roaming to "where no man has gone before" and becoming a legend who rewrites history. I love how confident the narrator sounds.

Dragons - Stratovarius
lyrics
Another defiance power-up anthem! This one's begging for a literal interpretation of the dragons dragging "you" to the ground – actual dragons vs someone who can also fly? IDK.

So far, all I've got is:

Walking on Broken Glass - Annie Lennox (Music Video):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y25stK5ymlA

The story here is so rich and so fun - who're the two nobles fighting it out for love here. Annie's character is bold as hell. I want backstory! And I want to know where they go after the end of the video

I'll probably nominate something Ninja Sex Party related, since that's always fun. Maybe Ode to Billy Joe again?
