Do You Remember the First Time - Pulp (Song)

So, what do any of the characters remember about the first time? Why was the first time the worst time (if it really was)? Do different characters remember it differently? How have they changed since then?

The first time doing what, anyway? I mean sex is the obvious answer but it doesn’t have to be about that, it could be a whole series of different first times.

Secretly - Skunk Anansie (Song)

I’ve always read this song as the narrator pining for some slightly flaky friend who is supposed to be with someone else, but spends time with him/her (secretly). It seems like he/she gets their own way in the end, but it doesn’t all go smoothly.

It all feels quite teenage as well with all the feeling confused that’s going on in the song and “talking about boys and girls and your frigging dreams”. Perhaps the confusion is to do with sexuality, maybe the narrator and the friend are both boys and the friend feels like he should be with a girl but has feelings for the narrator.

There’s a lot open to interpretation there in the details, but I’d love to read the story with all the pining.

Once and Never Again - The Long Blondes (Song)

So as I see it this song is about an older woman who is offering to take out a younger woman after she’s been messed about by her boyfriend. I’d love to read about their night out, and what happened next.

There is some definite suggestiveness with “how I’d love to feel a girl your age”. Does she have her way with her or not? Does it only happen “once and never again”, or is there more to it?

First of the Gang - Morrissey (Song)

So who is Hector? How does he steal all hearts away? How does he die? Who are the other “pretty petty thieves”? Who is it in the story that is in love, having romantic moments in all these defiantly unromantic settings like the reservoir and the home for the blind? And do they have motorbikes?

I always imagine this set in some kind of 1950s/60s era setting in some dead end town, but it could be any time or place, really, past, present or future.

True Faith - New Order (Song)

I’ve always thought there was something slightly sinister about this song. Who is the narrator and why are people afraid of him? Why has his childhood been replaced by fear? Why does his life depend on the morning sun? I mean, it’s probably all about drugs, but what if it wasn’t, what if it was about psychic powers or a dystopian police state or zombies or spies?

There are no remaining pinch hits.
