Broadside - Nancy Kerr & Martin Simpson & John Smith (Song)

I'm completely charmed by this song. Ostensibly it's about the meeting of Grace O'Malley with Elizabeth I, but you don't have to stick to that; I would just really enjoy something about female sailors (privateers, pirates, Navy) being awesome. Historical Age of Sail or fantasy AUs absolutely welcome. Maybe you've got a cat-and-mouse between a pirate and a Navy officer on the order of Kate Beaton's "Nemesis" cartoon. Or a story of a girl who ran away to sea and became a sailor or pirate. As long as there's ships sailed by women being spectacular, I'm down.

Hoist Up the Thing - The Longest Johns (Song)

I find this song endlessly delightful and I'd love to see some art based on it—particularly the sheer chaos energy of that last verse and chorus, with the narrator of the song surrounded by just ... a mess. It feels like the reverse of "the only human in a Muppet movie"; the narrator is a total muppet surrounded by people expecting him to be a real captain, and he's so in over his head. Feel free to go as silly as you like.

Neil Tennant has said that the song is about a kept woman, and the Derek Jarman video is pretty literal on that count, but I feel like there's plenty of room for variation or ambiguity regarding the characters' genders, their motives, their emotions, etc etc etc. So maybe there are more stories you want to tell about them, or images to evoke.

Nesmith gives us a nice sketch outline of who Sunset Sam, Lucy and Ramona are, but the song always whets my appetite for more. Why did Ramona leave New York? What sort of kinship have they discovered - platonic? Romantic? (You can go with either a poly situation or having them develop a found family bond). Do they move in together? Is Sam really gay? If he is, do the girls try to hook him up with one of their friends? Do any of them ever make it in Hollywood? With or without each other's help? This song's pretty ideal for a red string of fate/soulmate bonding story, so if that's your bag have at it. What do their families think of them having run off to California? Do the girls help Sam sell his watches? Do they take him to the roller disco? What happens as they age and the Sunset Strip changes? Or do they age at all?
Or you can tell me who Cisco is, what sort of "treats" he sells (is it simply drugs or something more magical? In fact a magical AU might be fun for this one).

Look, I adore this wonderful, ridiculous music video and I want to live in a world where blue collar versions of Cher and Meatloaf strike up a relationship/one night stand all the while flipping in and out of their performance outfits and flirting and dancing on top of a bar at a dive bar.
So is it just a one-night stand or is it (gulp) love? What about Cher's 'daddy' - is it her actual dad or a lover or husband she's yearning to escape? How long have they been dancing around this one-night stand and how long have they been If they try to strike up a relationship. How awkward/strange is it to actually learn things about one another? Maybe they sleep together and part but a couple of their friends (Meatloaf's team and Cher's group of girlfriends did look pretty chummy when they left them behind in the bar) get married and they find themselves acting as part of the bridal party and have to hash out their feelings.
Is she always a tough biker chick or is this just her weekend get-up? Maybe they encounter each out in the bland working world and have to deal with having their covers blown. What's his baseball team like? Maybe they go to a concert together. Or a formal work event. Even better: she's on a company softball team and has to play his team. They get married on a whim and it works unexpectedly well for them. They meet each other's families.

Mary - American Murder Song (Song)

Poor Mary! I always felt her inclusion in a series of albums about murder was a little unfair (she didn’t intentionally kill her father!) but that also means her song is especially haunting, inspite (or because) of its chipper tune. It says that she faded into fog, but that doesn’t mean she died, just that no one from her hometown ever saw her again. The music videos show that she made it to the 6 Mile Inn with Lavinia Fisher and the other murderers from the albums, along with a supernatural personification of America- you don’t have to use any of that, but it’s fun if you do. If so, how does she interact with the rest of them, and does she escape the inn when it crumbles? And if you don’t want to use any of that, where does she end up? Even with a dark tone, cuteness involving the bulldog is a plus! (DNW harm to the bulldog!)

I vastly prefer versions of this ballad with a daughter, and Broadside Electric is what introduced me to it! I love the daughter, and how she defies the usual tragic deaths of Child Ballad heroines by becoming a great hunter and avenging her mother. What exactly happened with the curse the mother set so that the child “will be more mine than yours”? Did Jellon Grame not care that his daughter grew at an unnatural rate? Did she fade into nothingness after fulfilling her purpose, or did she go on to avenge other women in other Child Ballads? (Possible hook- our great archer huntress is Maid Marian!)

An absolutely haunting song, deserving of haunting stories! From what I read online, it may be based on a true story but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of detail, so feel free to invent whatever you want based on what’s in the song. There’s so much that can be spun off from here- something healing about getting away from the feud, something gritty about how it all got started, a ghost story where the dead father really is taunting his son, something hardboiled or southern gothic or even redemptive. Can the narrator ever find peace?

This song is so delightfully spooky! Is the mysterious man the devil? An evil fairy? Something even stranger? You could go into details about the nature of what happened, or what happens afterwards and whether the narrator ever encounters the man again, or has other magic encounters in the woods. As with the song title, is the woods itself magic? What is the source of the shining eyes, creeping feet and tiny cries? What happens in the woods at night? Do those “backwards words” link the guy to the Black Lodge in Twin Peaks?

I first thought of this song as a noirish femme fatale tale, but then I saw a fan video that set it to spaghetti western footage and now I love the idea of setting it in that genre as well! The concept for this album (and band) was a plantation where the enslaved turned to the devil instead of Jesus for salvation and sang spirituals to him. That’s a pretty kick-ass story right there. Is the devil truly a being of evil, or just misunderstood, or somewhere in between? What aid does he give, and what comes of that aid? It’s the perfect setup for folk horror, brutal or triumphant or both. I didn’t nominate the music video, but feel free to pull any imagery from it you like!

I love the mythic, vaguely Arthurian feel to this song, where you’d fully believe it was written a thousand years ago and is now the only record of some local legend. If you want to connect it to the Arthurian legends feel free, but there’s plenty to work with even without that. The witch is so mysterious! The knight came from a very bad situation! Who are they both, and what will they do when the song is ended? I’d prefer it they remained vaguely good guys, but there can be some morally gray medievalia going on. I love Heather Dale’s Arthur songs, and this one is no exception! As someone who fell in love with the king since seeing Camelot as a young age, I’m so moved by his love song here. This could be an Arthur/Guinevere story with a happy ending, or Arthur/OFC (or heck, Arthur/Morgan or Arthur/Nimue) if that ship has sailed. Something romantic and mythic and anxious but hopeful. It’s been so eerie to hear this song of late, for obvious reasons- but then, it’s eerie enough as it is. The singer seems so sinister to me, like a siren attempting to lure his own love to his doom, but you don’t have to make him evil- he could be maddened or simply crying out over loneliness and not expecting an answer. Or he could be evil after all. Maybe he’s already a ghost and all that remains is the desire to take his lover with him. This song makes me think of the plague banquet scene in Herzog’s Nosferatu, and I think it would be really cool to set it in a historical period; any that had a plague will do! Historical details are fun but not necessary; gothic mood is more important nitpicking here!

Historical Age of Sail or fantasy AUs absolutely welcome. Maybe you've got a cat-and-mouse between a pirate and a Navy officer on the order of Kate Beaton's "Nemesis" cartoon. Or a story of a girl who ran away to sea and became a sailor or pirate. As long as there's ships sailed by women being spectacular, I'm down.

I find this song endlessly delightful and I'd love to see some art based on it—particularly the sheer chaos energy of that last verse and chorus, with the narrator of the song surrounded by just ... a mess. It feels like the reverse of "the only human in a Muppet movie"; the narrator is a total muppet surrounded by people expecting him to be a real captain, and he's so in over his head. Nesmith gives us a nice sketch outline of who Sunset Sam, Lucy and Ramona are, but the song always whets my appetite for more. Why did Ramona leave New York? What sort of kinship have they discovered - platonic? Romantic? (You can go with either a poly situation or having them develop a found family bond). Do they move in together? Is Sam really gay? If he is, do the girls try to hook him up with one of their friends? Do any of them ever make it in Hollywood? With or without each other's help? This song's pretty ideal for a red string of fate/soulmate bonding story, so if that's your bag have at it. What do their families think of them having run off to California? Do the girls help Sam sell his watches? Do they take him to the roller disco? What happens as they age and the Sunset Strip changes? Or do they age at all?

Look, I adore this wonderful, ridiculous music video and I want to live in a world where blue collar versions of Cher and Meatloaf strike up a relationship/one night stand all the while flipping in and out of their performance outfits and flirting and dancing on top of a bar at a dive bar.
So is it just a one-night stand or is it (gulp) love? What about Cher's 'daddy' - is it her actual dad or a lover or husband she's yearning to escape? How long have they been dancing around this one-night stand and how long have they been If they try to strike up a relationship. How awkward/strange is it to actually learn things about one another? Poor Mary! I always felt her inclusion in a series of albums about murder was a little unfair (she didn’t intentionally kill her father!) but that also means her song is especially haunting, inspite (or because) of its chipper tune. It says that she faded into fog, but that doesn’t mean she died, just that no one from her hometown ever saw her again. The music videos show that she made it to the 6 Mile Inn with Lavinia Fisher and the other murderers from the albums, along with a supernatural personification of America- you don’t have to use any of that, but it’s fun if you do. If so, how does she interact with the rest of them, and does she escape the inn when it crumbles? And if you don’t want to use any of that, where does she end up? Even with a dark tone, cuteness involving the bulldog is a plus! (DNW harm to the bulldog!)

I vastly prefer versions of this ballad with a daughter, and Broadside Electric is what introduced me to it! I love the daughter, and how she defies the usual tragic deaths of Child Ballad heroines by becoming a great hunter and avenging her mother. What exactly happened with the curse the mother set so that the child “will be more mine than yours”? Did Jellon Grame not care that his daughter grew at an unnatural rate? Did she fade into nothingness after fulfilling her purpose, or did she go on to avenge other women in other Child Ballads? (Possible hook- our great archer huntress is Maid Marian!)

From what I read online, it may be based on a true story but there doesn’t seem to be a lot of detail, so feel free to invent whatever you want based on what’s in the song. There’s so much that can be spun off from here- something healing about getting away from the feud, something gritty about how it all got started, a ghost story where the dead father really is taunting his son, something hardboiled or southern gothic or even redemptive. Can the narrator ever find peace?

This song is so delightfully spooky! Is the mysterious man the devil? An evil fairy? Something even stranger? You could go into details about the nature of what happened, or what happens afterwards and whether the narrator ever encounters the man again, or has other magic encounters in the woods. As with the song title, is the woods itself magic? What is the source of the shining eyes, creeping feet and tiny cries? What happens in the woods at night? Do those “backwards words” link the guy to the Black Lodge in Twin Peaks?

I first thought of this song as a noirish femme fatale tale, but then I saw a fan video that set it to spaghetti western footage and now I love the idea of setting it in that genre as well! Keep it a crime story or weave in magic realism if you wish, Tom Waits is mysterious like that. William the Pleaser has his stories to tell…

The concept for this album (and band) was a plantation where the enslaved turned to the devil instead of Jesus for salvation and sang spirituals to him. That’s a pretty kick-ass story right there. Is the devil truly a being of evil, or just misunderstood, or somewhere in between? What aid does he give, and what comes of that aid? It’s the perfect setup for folk horror, brutal or triumphant or both. I didn’t nominate the music video, but feel free to pull any imagery from it you like!

I love the mythic, vaguely Arthurian feel to this song, where you’d fully believe it was written a thousand years ago and is now the only record of some local legend. If you want to connect it to the Arthurian legends feel free, but there’s plenty to work with even without that. The witch is so mysterious! The knight came from a very bad situation! Who are they both, and what will they do when the song is ended? I’d prefer it they remained vaguely good guys, but there can be some morally gray medievalia going on. And I’m happy for Knight/Witch fic, but please no details on centaur sex!

I love Heather Dale’s Arthur songs, and this one is no exception! As someone who fell in love with the king since seeing Camelot as a young age, I’m so moved by his love song here. This could be an Arthur/Guinevere story with a happy ending, or Arthur/OFC (or heck, Arthur/Morgan or Arthur/Nimue) if that ship has sailed. Something romantic and mythic and anxious but hopeful. You could also set this between a medieval knight and lady who look back to stories of Arthur to relate to!

It’s been so eerie to hear this song of late, for obvious reasons- but then, it’s eerie enough as it is. The singer seems so sinister to me, like a siren attempting to lure his own love to his doom, but you don’t have to make him evil- he could be maddened or simply crying out over loneliness and not expecting an answer. Or he could be evil after all. Maybe he’s already a ghost and all that remains is the desire to take his lover with him. This song makes me think of the plague banquet scene in Herzog’s Nosferatu, and I think it would be really cool to set it in a historical period; any that had a plague will do! Historical details are fun but not necessary; gothic mood is more important nitpicking here!
