Thank you to all who have contributed to the 51 stories currently waiting in the archive.
At the knell of deadline, I have three pinch hits (#s 6–8). If you can write for them, please contact me. Consider treats if you can't write a full assignment. In fact, consider treats generally. (This is not a ploy. I already have a treat! Thank you, writer(s).)
Pinch hit for vtn - CLAIMED
1.
Radio Bomb - Matthew Good Band (Song)
Summary
Pirate radio adventures! I want to hear a story about the crew of the secret mountain base, escaping the authorities to broadcast all night long. What kind of programming did they broadcast? Are they in the present day, or '90s Canada when the song was written, or maybe a dystopian world where the government has complete control over the airwaves and censors with an iron fist? And did they ever get their satellite?

2.
After the Rain Has Fallen - Sting (Song)
Summary
Actual pirate adventures! I'd love to find out what happened to the princess and her gentleman thief after she escapes with him (as I assume she did) living as Saharan pirates. What was it like for her to adjust from her sheltered life to living on the streets? Did her royal family ever try to chase her down? What became of the man she was betrothed to?

3.
A Boy and His Machine Gun - Matthew Good Band (Song)
Summary
The atmosphere of this song is so wonderfully creepy. There's a lot of opportunity for darkness here and if you want to take that darkness up to 11, I'm completely on board. Who is the narrator, and why are they visiting the boy in the institution? What did the boy do with his machine gun, or is the machine gun even literal at all? Why does no one else visit him? And why might the boy think the narrator is evil?

4.
Androgynous - The Replacements (Song)
Summary
I just want to know more about Dick and Jane, how they met, what it was like for both of them growing up and being non-gender-conforming before they found each other. I see this song as being set in the era and place it comes from - the 80s in the midwestern US, especially with that reference to Kewpie dolls - and I'm curious about the human interest story about these two kids in love in an era of social change.

5.
Gold Dust Woman - Fleetwood Mac (Song)
Summary
I know this song is at least partially about cocaine, but I'm interested in a literal interpretation - I want to know more about the gold dust woman. She sounds like a very intriguing person with a backstory all her own that we don't really hear about. We know she's rich ("take your silver spoon") but not much else. Where did she come from and what made her into the heartbreaker she is now? What did she do to the narrator that made her cry, made her break down, and shattered her illusions of love?

1.
The Curse - Josh Ritter (Song)
Summary
Mummy romance! How did he get the curse? How did they negotiate the press? Were there legal obstacles? Or just lots and lots of feeeeeeeeeeeelings.
2.
Girl in the War (Song)
Summary
Um... I'm not going to request anything here. Do what feels right, this is a great, mysterious song.
3.
Jerusalem - Dan Bern (Song)
Summary
I think I want something that plays with the ambiguity of his confession... Does he start performing miracles, or things that at least he can claim are miracles? Does he get followers? Is he laughed at?
Or maybe something that considers him to have a specific audience, the person that he is confessing his love to. What is that audience like, and how does he or she respond to his story?
4.
King of Spain – Moxy Früvous (Song)
Summary
Why is Lisa unspeakable? Please, please, mention Lisa!
5.
The Piano Has Been Drinking - Tom Waits (Song)
Summary
I would love something that takes the song really, really literally. If you're not up to that sort of dark farce, the metaphor is good enough for me. So many of Waits's songs conjure for me the image of a place that would be irredeemably seedy if not for the beauty and magic of music, with its power of transformation. That's why this song works for me.
6.
Five Years - David Bowie (Song)
Summary
I want all the Ziggy Stardust fic.
By this point, you may have gotten the message that I like fake messiah stories. I do. I love the sadness and the hope that intermingle in a good fake messiah story, how there's this track where it seems like everything can finally go right and then somehow unexpectedly you veer off the path. What makes Ziggy Stardust a particularly great fake messiah story is how it swirls everything in a thick layer of ROCK AND ROLL, like the power of sex and drugs and revolution can fix everything except maybe it can't.

1.
Opera Maria and Draco - Nobuo Uematsu (Song)
Summary:
I'm interested in how Draco & Maria fell in love! The fact that she was engaged to Ralse, who calls Draco "knave of the western horde," makes me think that Maria and Draco perhaps had a Romeo & Juliet thing going on? Their countries were warring and/or on poor terms, but they fell in love anyhow. Or something like that. ;o I'm also interested in Ralse - he seems to really care for Maria despite the fact that she doesn't return his affections. Something written from his POV would be amazing~
2.
Love Vigilantes - New Order (Song)
Summary
I've always interpreted this song this way: The narrator is already dead, and it's only once he returns home and sees his own death notice that he finally realizes it. So I'd love to see something written from that angle! What happens afterward - does he accept his death and move on to the afterlife, or does he linger around, unable to come to terms with it? Does he try to watch over his wife as a ghost, maybe making things harder for her in the long run? (The wife was holding a telegram, and he mentions the "land of the sun", so he may have been involved in the battle of Iwo Jima?? Just a guess.)
3.
Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits (Song)
Summary
I'm really interested in the backstory here - how did the band get started? What inspired them to play the kind of music that they do? Are the singer, George, & Harry longtime friends, or is their relationship solely based around the music? The singer seems familiar with the other two and knows a good bit about their lives outside of the band, so I'm thinking the former, but whatever you want to do here is fine. :)
4.
Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town - Cake (Song)
Summary
I'd love to see this song told from Ruby's perspective. Is it just the physical handicap of the narrator that drives her away? Or is his personality also different after returning from the war? How have the things he saw in Vietnam (I assume it must be Vietnam) changed him? I imagine her dalliances are less about his inability to satisfy her and more about her watching him become a totally different person and feeling the distance between them growing, and seeking comfort with others because of it. (But I imagine there is also a lot of guilt in her mind as well.)
Deadline of each pinch hit is 05:00 am EDT or 21:00 pm NZST, Wednesday 25 September. I know that may seem like an odd time to Americans especially, but it's calculated to give me a back-up if something goes wrong on your end. :)
