Lolly Lolly Lolly Get Your Adverbs Here - Schoolhouse Rock (Music Video)
Fanfiction

"You can paint it very neatly or rather sloppily"

What's the adverb business like these days? Do they have competitors? Have they needed to modernize?

Pictures of Matchstick Men - Camper Van Beethoven (Song)
Fanfiction

"You're in the sky, you're with the sky"

What's happening in this song? Who are the matchstick men? What accounts for "your" presence everywhere? Is it strong emotion, or something stranger?

Save the Bones for Henry Jones - Johnny Mercer and the King Cole Trio (Song)
Fanfiction

"He don't need a napkin 'cause the things he eats don't drip! Blip!"

Lots of people don't eat meat, but they don't eat bones. So what is up with Brother Henry? What sort of "vegetarian" is he? (And who is his mother?)

Three Might Be Duende - They Might Be Giants (Song)

Tuesday's Dead - Cat Stevens (Song)
Fanfiction

"I'm only the underline of the word"

What does it mean for Tuesday to be dead? Is there a specific allegorical or mythical background for the song's philosophizing? How literal is the last verse?

February - Joan Baez (song)
Fanart, Fanfiction

I'd like to know more about: the narrator themself; their relationship with the person they're addressing; their relationship with their new lover. Maybe they haven't broken up after all; maybe they decide that three people can get through the winter better than two. Genders are up to you.

Art: there's lots to work with here (I love the 'long red glare' of Christmas). The keys frozen in the ice. What does a crocus look like when you've forgotten what a crocus is?

Green Green Grass of Home - Tom Jones (song)
Fanart, Fanfiction

Does the narrator ever make it home? Perhaps they could return as a ghost if the death sentence is carried out. Where have they been and what were they doing there? What might have changed in their absence? Why are they in prison in the first place? Is there a last-minute pardon? A daring escape, possibly facilitated by Mary? I'm also intrigued by the sad old padre (what effective characterisation there, in only three words!). What sort of relationship does the narrator have with him? What's his history?

Art-specific: there's a lot of colour in the opening verses (green - gold - lips like cherries - more green) - and then bang! grey walls! I feel as if there's something that could be done with that contrast.

Joan of Arc - Leonard Cohen (Song)
Fanart, Fanfiction

With this song, I feel that there's not so much story to fill in as there are themes to explore. (But I might well be wrong about that, and if you wanted to do something plotty that would be great too!) It's a wonderful song, expressing the complicated nature of sainthood and duty and martyrdom. The intersection between the desire to stop what one's doing and the desire to die; where holiness meets depression; love and death; war. Anything around any of that would be amazing.

For art: the wedding imagery is really vivid and disturbing, and I love all the contrasts. A fiery wedding dress?

Ne pleure pas Jeannette (Song)
Fanart, Fanfiction

This song seems to begin quite a long way through the story. How did we get to this point? Why is Pierre in prison? How did Jeannette meet him? Who are the people trying to marry her off to a prince or to a baron? Is this a realistic goal? You could keep this in the implied medieval French setting, or move it off to some fantasy kingdom, or somewhere completely unexpected.

Ramblin' Boy - Tom Paxton (Song)
Fanart, Fanfiction

These two must have had some happy times rambling, some sunshine as well as the rain and snow. I'd like to know more about that. Where did they go? What did they see? Show me, in fic or art. I'd be quite content with happy afterlife rambling, too. Their relationship could be platonic or romantic or both. Thoughts on that? Other questions. How did these two meet? Is the narrator still rambling? Does he ever move on from his loneliness?

Streets of Philadelphia - Bruce Springsteen (Song)
Fanfiction

This song is about a survivor (at least for now, since he may also be dying) confronting his grief and the tragedy of the AIDS epidemic, but I think it lends itself to fic about pretty much any (post-)apocalyptic scenario you can imagine and the attendant trauma of that. I’m particularly taken with how the lyrics seem to be a gay man addressing a male lover or a one-night stand: “Receive me, brother, with your faithless kiss, or will we leave each other alone like this?” Setting the fic in Philadelphia could be interesting but isn't necessary. So many potential dark corners to explore!

Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through - Meat Loaf (Music Video)
Fanfiction

This music video was directed by Michael Bay, and it has gorgeous carnival-esque and urban fantasy visuals…along with amazing worldbuilding. I love the pointy-eared fortuneteller (Meat Loaf’s character), and how he rides around on his motorbike with the sidecar, moving between dimensions and saving lost souls. What’s his story? Who is he and how did he end up in that role? Who is the goddess/angel character at the end? Did she create the fortuneteller somehow? The video implies that the runaway (Angelina Jolie’s character), or some aspect of her, becomes a second fortuneteller, which raises all sorts of intriguing possibilities about the fortuneteller’s alternate dimension and how it perpetuates itself…

Bury My Lovely - October Project (Music Video)
Fanfiction

“Bury My Lovely” may be about childhood sexual abuse, so that’s one possible direction but not by any means the only one! It could be about a haunted house or a ghost! Are the child, the young woman, and the old woman all the same person at different times…or different people entirely? How do they relate to each other, and why do they look unhappy? What’s going on in the attic, with the key? What is being buried—a doll, an actual baby, or is this a metaphor for something more sinister? Who are wearing those ghost costumes? The music video seems to be taking place in the autumn, around Halloween. I love the American gothic visuals of the music video, the atmospheric use of light and shadow, the timelessness, the foreboding and the mystery.
