There Lived a King - Gilbert & Sullivan (Song)
FanFic

It didn't happen. Clearly. The Grand Inquisitor makes it up to scare the gondoliers out of their republicanism. But what if it had? What if there was an actual country where the king promoted everybody to the top of their respective fields? What would that like that? I'd like to see some scenes from this country. Gilbert gives us a few snapshots ('Now there's a sight you couldn't beat!/Two party leaders in each street/Maintaining, with no little heat,/Their various opinions') - what happens if you push them to their logical conclusions? How many political parties can that be, and what does parliament look like as a result? What does a Church look like when there are as many bishops as there are tabby cats?

Vilja - Franz Lehár/Victor León/Leo Stein (song)
FanFic

This feels like a very incomplete story. I want to know more. Is the Vilja exerting some kind of supernatural compulsion over the huntsman, or is the huntsman just failing to get over something that was only ever going to be a casual fling? Are we talking La Belle Dame Sans Merci or Creepy Stalker? Or is it a misunderstanding - sixty years passed for the huntsman while the Vilja was popping to the shops for a pint of milk? Take this in any direction you like.

Green Green Grass of Home - Tom Jones (song)
FanFic

Does the narrator ever make it home? Perhaps they could return as a ghost if the death sentence is carried out. Where have they been and what were they doing there? What might have changed in their absence? Why are they in prison in the first place? Is there a last-minute pardon? A daring escape, possibly facilitated by Mary? I'm also intrigued by the sad old padre (what effective characterisation there, in only three words!). What sort of relationship does the narrator have with him? What's his history?

The Foggy Foggy Dew - Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears (Song)
FanFic

Some things I'm curious about: what is the fair young maid up to now? (I hope the answer at least partly involves 'having fun', and I would very much rather she weren't dead.) What does the narrator tell his son about her? Does the son ever try to find her? And the narrator is still a bachelor at the end of the song. A man's man doing a man's job? Is he a bachelor or a *bachelor*? (This is Britten and Pears, after all...) And what *is* it about the foggy, foggy dew?

Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts (Song)
FanFic

What is this strange playing-card town that "only" has one diamond mine? Lily never finds a third queen, but why was she looking for one in the first place? Come to that, what's the relationship between her and Rosemary? Why doesn't Big Jim make it into the title? Why isn't he surprised? Where have he and the Jack met before? Is Rosemary guilty? What were her other bad deeds? What is her "one good deed", and, if it's killing Big Jim, what was going on there? Why is Lily thinking of her father? Does the Jack of Hearts care about any of this? Answer any of these questions, or anything else that the song throws up!
