Brainstorming for Jukebox 2014

Welcome to Jukebox 2014!

Nominations for this exchange will open on the 18th of April, depending on your timezone.

If you're interested in participating, here is a post to talk about songs you want stories for, and gauge or drum up others' interest in those canons.

From the FAQ, here's what I'm defining as a song.

What counts as a song?

A piece of recorded music that includes lyrics* (in any language) and is shorter than 20 minutes. This may include a video.

Songs nominated for this exchange must be widely available. Preferably, there will be a YouTube link or a link on the artist's website or another publicly accessible link. I will create a table of links and lyrics for use in the exchange.

The song must be able to stand on its own without reference to a longer work. I don’t object to people nominating songs from musicals or operettas – but if it would be necessary to understand the whole musical, or the whole operetta, or to read a contextual explanation in order to appreciate the piece, then that piece of music is not appropriate for this exchange.

Songs must also be able to stand on their own without reference to the artist - unless the song is autobiographical, or self-referential in some other way. This exchange is not the place to request musician RPF. In general, actors who appear in music videos are to be treated as characters, not as their real-life selves.

Covers by specific artists can be nominated separately.

You can either nominate a song on its own, or a song with an associated music video. It's possible to differentiate these when nominating on AO3.

Songs that don’t quite fit these requirements, but that fit the goals of the exchange, can be negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

*By request, I am willing to include programmatic music - music that does not have lyrics, but where the composer, performer, and audience can agree upon a strong narrative theme. Yes, that's a broad definition - if you have a piece you think suits that criteria, and suggest it to me, I am likely to agree. I will ask you to provide contextual links (a wikipedia page would do). When you sign up, please include in your requests at least one song that does have lyrics, for ease of matching.

See the AO3 collection page for more information about this exchange.

It occurs to me that I still can't tell if the protag is trying to stay out of Hell or get into it....

Chanson de Melisande (Faure) - very spooky song about the king's blind daughters who are locked away, with (as the song transpires) no hope. Rather chilling.

Ordinary Town (Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer) - This is an ordinary town / And the prophet stands alone / This is an ordinary town / And we crucify our own... I find it hilarious to think that Jesus went there and they were like, sorry, dude, you can do your crucifixion stuff somewhere else, we only crucify our own folks...

Der Zwerg (Schubert) (translation here) - Zdenka nominated and requested this last year and I fell in love with it. Also very spooky... an open-ended song of a dwarf and a queen, and he eventually kills her, and what the heck is going on??

And then a couple of repeats from last year:

Chiron Beta Prime (Jonathan Coulton) (Youtube, lyrics) - so many questions! What did they do that sent them to Chiron Beta Prime? What is Earth like? (Apparently not overrun with robot overlords, if they're sending messages there.) Do they ever escape? What was redacted?

They Can't Take That Away from Me - George Gershwin and Ira Gerswin (Song): Youtube, lyrics. I... kind of really really want the dark sci-fi AU where memory wipes are on the table.

YES I'M SO EXCITED! I've been waiting for this since the last round.

Anyway, songs.

Rumbrave - Murder By Death (lyrics). "When we meet you will see / I will destroy everything of beauty / When we meet then you'll know / I am the ax that clears the forest..." A song about an evil man set in a vaguely Old West world. I personally like the supernatural/demonic interpretation, but there are so many ways to take this.

Witch Hunt - Jack Off Jill (mostly accurate lyrics). Incredibly creepy, violent, and surreal, this is the (possibly metaphorical) story about a modern day witch hunt and murder. Also evil carnivals. It’s almost more of a spoken word piece than a song (though it is music). It would make a great horror/fantasy piece.

Do It Like A Dude - Jessie J (Video) (lyrics). Because fic about an all-female, queer underground fighting ring/dance troupe is exactly what this world needs. I'm also partial to the interpretation of lyrics that says "You think I can't get HER like you" rather than "you think I can't get HURT like you."

Dollhouse - Melanie Martinez (Video) (lyrics). A song about what happens in the dollhouse when you’re not looking. Kind of melancholy, lovely pop music. It could work both as a metaphor or as a story about literal dolls - or both! I love the aesthetics of this video, and her voice is perfect for the tone of the song.

Stellar Alchemist - The Impossible Girl (lyrics in the video description). Literally about star formation! It feels very hypnotic and mystical to me, like a song from an alien religion or something. Lots of things you could do with it.

Pale Horse - John Vanderslice (lyrics). I'm not actually sure what this song is about, but man, I want to know. It's so haunting and has this building power to it - aspects of it are both frightening and inspiring. "Free the blood that must ensue / We are many and they are few." What kind of revolutionary post-apocalypse is this set in, and who's rising up?

And these are some others I'm considering but am not sure about.

The Haunted Phonograph - ThouShaltNot
Kill My Boyfriend - Natalia Kills
Lolita - Lana Del Rey
The Culling of the Fold - The Decemberists
The Burning - Ghoultown

I really like This is the Happiness and Peace of Mind Committee! Is it related to another fandom, or is it a song that stands on its own?

The Green Valley gave me goosebumps (and plot bunnies, actually!). What a gorgeous song.

It is and it isn't. The song is actually a Vocaloid song originally. The creator of the original has two more songs that they made. Both have a sort of similar feel. I actually love all three and was considering nominating all three. The version I picked for The Happiness and Peace of Mind Committee is my favorite English cover.

These are both in Japanese and the singer is a Vocaloid rather than a person, but they are the sequels to the original Vocaloid version of The Happiness and Peace of Mind Committee.

That's definitely what it's actually about iirc from what Andrew Bird has said, but I looooove the imagery and would also love a story based on it -- especially if there was also a terrible relationship involved :D

I'm soooo torn about what to actually nominate! I'll whittle it down. I didn't know about Night on Fic Mountain, thanks for mentioning it. :D

Ha, I commented on the LJ post earlier but apparently the DW side is where the action is! I'm happy that you liked "Der Zwerg" -- I've been thinking about requesting it again this year. That's a neat video! I don't think I've ever seen a music video for an art song before, but I'm charmed that it exists.

The "Chanson de Melisande" is cool and creepy.

Also:

Whipping Boy - Shearwater. Because I feel like that interaction with the boy and the wolf is fandom-ready tbh.

Please, Mister Postman - the Carpenters. Why isn't she getting those damn letters?!

I am definitely going to nominate it. Stupid question for you, should I list the artist as the name of the youtube account as it is an English cover by them?

CARPENTERS! Eeeeeeeeeee I used to love them so. Might still do, just haven't listened to them in a while...

Heh, I think about stories for songs all the time. I'm really happy that Jukebox is around for that purpose. :)

My mom was a big Carpenters fans, so their songs are all about childhood for me. (And like a lot of childhood things, they take on a darker meaning now that I can actually understand the lyrics, and also know about Karen Carpenter's struggles.)

I hadn't listened to them in a long, long time, but I started again a few weeks ago while making a playlist for my mom (who is a life-long fan) and they still hold up imho!

Yes, absolutely! (Especially if Zdenka nominates Der Zwerg again like she said she might :) )

And I'd forgotten about this, but Sirvalkyrie nominated Wings (Wild Arms 3) last year, which I ALSO desperately want fic for now after listening to it last year. It is crying out for a time travel story...
