Here is the sign-up form. Welcome to this year's challenge! Sign-ups will close at 11:59pm EDT, Thursday 27 April.

You can request 3-10 canons, and offer 3-10 canons. If a canon doesn't appear in the drop-down menu when you go to enter it, you can copy and paste it from the tag set and press enter.

Each of your requests and offers must be tagged with 1-3 of the labels "Fanfiction", "Podfic", and "Fanart".

Your requests have a space for optional details. Go ahead and use them to talk about how you understand the song and what kind of art/fic/podfic you might like. However, your gift creator doesn't have to follow your prompts. They do have to respect clear and specific Do-Not-Wants listed in the sign-up (like "no pregnancy" "no scat" "no rainbows").

If you are requesting Podficcer's Choice of Fandom, it's up to a podfic artist what work they choose to record, though you are welcome to include likes and DNWs to inspire their choice.

Your requests have a space for a letter link, if you want to provide one. This link must be included before sign-ups are closed. If you are writing a letter, please have it complete and unlocked by the end of 30 April.

Opting in to treats - change from last year: Please state if your AO3 preferences are set to allow you to receive treats or if you have this setting disabled. Include a statement in your optional details like Treats welcome or I have opted in to treats (or Treats disabled if true).

Podfic offering options

If you are offering podfic for a song or music video in the tag set, you are pledging to create both text and recording (500-5000 words). You are welcome to team up with a friend to create a work, whether you're the recording artist or the writer, but if that's what you intend, please contact us at jukebox.mod@gmail.com to let us know of the arrangement and to provide a contact email for your friend.

If you are offering podfic in combination with "Podficcer's Choice of Fandom", you are pledging to create a recording of a pre-existing song/MV fanwork, using your recipient's DNWs and general likes as guidance for your story choice. If this is the only thing you wish to match on, please say so in the Notes to Mods field so we don't accidentally send you a request where you have to write a story as well. Please make sure we can get in contact with you.

Notes to Mod in Offers

These are confidential notes where you can tell the mods (Minutia_R and Morbane) if you have any preferences about what you match on - for example, if you want to match on one request more than the others, or want to be assigned a particular style of prompts, etc. If you are a podfic artist who has to offer 3 fandoms but only wants to match on Podficcer's Choice of Fandom, please use Notes to Mods to say so. (Please don't tell us things like "I will not create anything in my DNWs" - if required to closely compare your own preferences and your potential recipients' preferences, we may miss something. Specific names/songs or very general preferences are great.)

AO3 has recently implemented a blocking feature - see AO3 news posts here, here, and here. This does not affect challenge matching. If you have another participant blocked or they have blocked you, please use your offers and requests, your notes to mods, or both, to help us help you avoid interactions with them.

Corrections are still welcome to the tables of sources for all canons (at this post).

You can comment here or contact us at jukebox.mod@gmail.com if you have any questions about signing up.

The recent Dime in the Jukebox fest - enjoy the works!

Welcome to the Dime in the Jukebox Fest, a prompt fest for fanworks based on songs and music videos! Have fun, and feel free to promote it on your journal/community/tumblr/discord server/whatever if you want. You can copy the code in this box wherever HTML applies:

Rules

1) Leave a song or a music video as a prompt. Please include a listening/watching link. Links to the lyrics (if any) and translations of the lyrics (if they are not in English) are appreciated but not required. You may also include a short phrase, such as a quote from the lyrics or something that particularly interests you about the song/video, as an additional prompt; this is optional but not required. One prompt per comment. Leave as many prompts as you like.

Here's a possible template for prompting:

2) Reply to other people’s prompts with fanworks. All mediums of fanworks are welcome! But please create the fanwork about the prompted song/video only; no other fandom knowledge should be necessary in order to appreciate the work. Exception: if you are making fanvids, a vid to the prompted song for any fandom is considered an acceptable fill.

Update: There's now an index of prompts and fills and a playlist for easier browsing! We will try to keep these updated, but things might not always make it up immediately.

Hello, everyone!

So, back in July, we discussed holding a more casual fest in this space, partly as a run-up to the exchange, to help people brainstorm and find more music to request and offer when it comes around, but mostly because more music-based fanworks are always better.

And now I can announce: the Dime in the Jukebox Fest will be opening for prompts and fills right here on this community on Feb 15th!

There will be more detailed rules posted at the time, but the basic idea is, leave prompts in the form of a song, and, optionally, a short phrase; fill prompts with any sort of fanwork your heart desires.

And now for the question about vids:

In the Jukebox Exchange, gifts have been required to be only about the requested song(s), with no crossovers with other fandoms allowed. Basically the idea was that the focus should be on the songs, and that people should be able to enjoy the stories and art with no other knowledge than having listened to them. And that is still going to be the rule going forward for the Dime in the Jukebox Fest. However, we're considering making an exception for fanvids, so that if anyone wants to fill a prompt with a fanvid for the prompted song, they can make it for any fandom they like.

There are a few reasons for this:

1) It's very hard to make basically an original works fanvid (although if anyone wants to make one, we'd love to see it!)

2) The nature of the medium means that there will be a certain amount of focus on the song and interpreting the song, regardless of the fandom the vid is for

3) Since vidding is a very labor-intensive medium, we don't expect people to post so many vids that they will significantly change the tone of the fest, and

4) Some people expressed interest.

So we decided to throw the question to the community: what do you think? Should we allow fanvids for outside fandoms for the Dime in the Jukebox fest? Leave a comment with your thoughts!

Several people responded to my last post, and it seems like there's more enthusiasm for the Dime model, which, fair enough; although I like the idea of the Shuffle model, I can definitely see some of the potential pitfalls.

So here's what we're currently thinking: There will be a casual prompt fest here at the community probably in the second half of February, so it can also help people brainstorm what songs they might want to request for the exchange. Any songs or music videos shorter than 20 minutes are welcome as prompts; additional details in prompts will also be welcome but not required. Further details closer to the time!

Here it is, the promised fest-related post!

So when I first came up with the idea for a jukebox-related casual fest, my idea was that there would be regular prompt posts--once a month or so--with a random song, or a handful of random songs, chosen from past Jukebox tagsets as the prompt. People could write stories or draw art or whatever based on the featured song, and post it as a reply to the prompt post and/or to a collection on AO3 as well as in their own spaces, and it would highlight some of the songs that people have nominated and requested over the years, and keep the spirit of Jukebox in our hearts year round, and it would be a fun community thing to see many different takes on the same song. Call this the Jukebox Shuffle model.

But then I thought, maybe a less frequent event--say, once a year, approximately opposite the Jukebox exchange--might generate more concentrated enthusiasm. If we did a more traditional prompt fest, where people could submit prompts consisting of a song and maybe a word or phrase about what sort of fill they'd be looking for, that might have more community interaction that would serve as a spur to people's creativity. And people could give any songs they wanted as prompts, which would be in the Jukebox spirit of discovering and sharing music, as well as maybe giving people new ideas about songs they'd want to nominate and request and create for in the next round of the exchange. Call this the Put Another Dime in the Jukebox model.

So, the questions are as follows:

1) Would you be interested in some sort of Jukebox-related casual fest?
2) Would you be more interested in the Shuffle or Dime model, or something in between the two, or something entirely different?
3) When would you be most able to participate? If it's going to be a once a year event, approximately what dates would work best?

Leave your votes and/or proposals in the comments!

Creator names are now revealed at the Jukebox 2022 collection! Thank you from us mods to everyone who prompted or promoted or perused or took pinch hits, everyone who created or commented, and everyone who took part in other ways such as offering beta services.

You are now welcome to talk about what you made. Although we ask participants not to remove gifts, you are welcome to post your work to other platforms now that the anonymous period is over. On the recipient side, you may want to download and save gifts.

If you have any feedback on this round, please feel free to share it. The collection remains open for late treats.

On a personal note, from me (Minutia) specifically, thank you to everyone for making my first time modding this exchange go so smoothly, and especially to my co-mod Morbane for so patiently showing me the ropes.

There will probably be a 2023 round of Jukebox. But there might be something sooner than that; we're considering some kind of song-based fest in between rounds. Keep an ear out! I hope that within the week I'll have a post up here to gauge general interest in a fest, as well as to find out what shape the fest should take to be of most interest to the community.

The collection remains open for treats.

Please comment on the work(s) made for you, and let creators know what other things you like as well. If there are problems, you can get in touch with us at jukebox.mod@gmail.com.

We hope there is much to enjoy among all the art, podfic, and fic!

All the pinch hits are in! Thank you very much, pinch hitters. That means that the exchange will be going live at the scheduled time of 10am EDT, Sunday 12 June, just under 12 hours from this post.

To get hyped, please enjoy a YouTube playlist of all the songs/MVs that have works (so far).

We will check again just before reveals and add videos for any last-minute treats or additions.

It's okay, they're still a few days (and a lot of pinch hitter effort) away. If all goes well, the collection will open at 10am EDT, Sunday 12 June (and see countdown).

In the meantime, if you've posted a work, please check
-that all of it is there! No weird cut-offs, no borked code, please make sure it's the right draft;
-that it does not include your recipient's DNWs;
-that if your recipient asked for a music video, you based your work on the music video and not just the lyrics;
-that it is for a medium your recipient requested in the same request as the song/MV you're creating for.

Please also tag your work with the music video or song you created for, in the format [Title] - [Artist] ([Song/Music Video]), just as it appears in your assignment - this will help the AO3 volunteers who wrangle the tags.

For editing thoughts, we have some volunteers (thank you) at the beta post.

If the above is good, I invite you to consider treats! They do not have to meet the same size minimums as an assignment. Please check through mods if you're not sure if someone wants a particular medium. Otherwise treat away.

Good news: all our initial pinch hits are claimed! Thank you so much, pinch hitters.

I have one creator query outstanding and look forward to a clarifying answer.

Another piece of info: no one signed up to Jukebox this year has the new AO3 setting enabled that prevents treating. That means everyone can receive treats. Please treat away!

Reminder: the deadline is 11:59pm EDT, Sunday 5 June and here's a countdown.

Given that the deadline is approaching, here is a call for betas.
