Some definites for me:

When Blackbirds Fly, by Michael Franks, on Youtube - whimsical and melancholic and bitter all at once. "When blackbirds laugh, it's not because they've been drinking / You're here in my head, but you still haven't said what you're thinking," and "When blackbirds fly, they leave their lovers behind them / It's no surprise, if you're looking for faults you can find them."

The Stranger Song, by Leonard Cohen, on Youtube - surreal, with lovely rhythms and images (Spanish guitar, yes?), "and while he talks his dreams to sleep, you notice there's a highway that is curling up like smoke above his shoulder…", all - apparently - organized around a theme of poker games.

I Feel Possessed, by Crowded House, on Youtube, also with a lovely cover by Oh Mercy, also on Youtube - an old favourite, which to me starts off spooky and yet holds a lot of promise.

Other possibles: Laurie Anderson, more Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon...
