This is a powerful and versatile song. The setting could be just about anything: Present-day, four years ago, anytime up to a hundred years ago, sci-fi, sci-fantasy, cyberpunk, steampunk, etc;
What is literal, what is metaphor? What manners of catastrophe would put seagulls in a desert, the oceans would have to boil or shift! The oceans could be painted black by something as harmless as nightfall or something as gruesome as oil spill! Do the woman and child really dance around a fire for the first time, or did they attain freedom amidst destruction? Did the narrator stay behind as the others left?
There is so much you could write here, far more than a thousand words. I can understand if you need to brush some details aside for time reasons. But at the core remains the question of why the people abandoned this town. Hopes, fears, threats, or all of that and something entirely else?

I don't think it is in any way asserted that Eddie and Monsieur Valentine be the same person, but it is probably easier to write under this assumption.

This song reminds me of red flags in abusive relationships, in particular how the abuser will attempt to save face by feinting repentance, only to take the next opportunity for abusive behaviour worse than before. This is backed by how they then demand "songs of praise" for something they have not done yet. And "this one's the last" implies that it's not the first fall and/or death. Are they really going to change their ways this time?
Besides, the lyrics may be sung by an unreliable narrator. "Cold and holy work" is a bizarre choice of words. The river motive especially confuses me. "She" fell, but then the narrator "crawl to the banks"? And her "rising river" runs down by her grave? It may be a metaphor I'm too dull for. If you feel the same way, you can just skip it. If you see something in it, I'm excited to hear it!

Are they meant to survive? What is the ultimate goal of this ritual? Is the sex that's happening around them incidental or part of it? Or part of some bigger celebration (not sure if it is necessarily celebratory). The ritual describe certainly has its own weird (or weirdly violent) sexual undertones as well. I'd really love to know anything more about this!

Or both! But clearly the singer and subject are drawn together and the singer is certain that they will both be tethered to the dark. Are they also tethered together? How/why does the subject get drawn in? Is this like a slippery slope kind of thing? What's the subject's intent, and how does it change? What's the singer's starting point? What's their intent?

Everyone is expecting this creature, and the idea seems to be to take care of yourself now while you can, and also look after what might be left behind. Is going down on all fours about worshipping or supplicating it? IS it more transformational? maybe they themselves turn into the stray cats, I don't know! But I'm also very curious about why the singer thinks that there is nothing left to save at this point. Has the Magpie taken everyone else? or is there something else happening that has drawn it's attention or made them easy victims for it? Was there some crisis that invited this disaster, or left them more vulnerable to it?

So what have we got here - aromantic heterosexual rich guy falls for crossdressing guy? Is that what this is? Or is it something else? And is he right - both that Andrew in drag is the only one for him and that Andrew would never do it again? Could Andrew be into him out of drag but the signer wouldn't reciprocate? I do care about gender for this one. Well, for the singer - do what you will with Andrew. Idk, what if Andrew was a trans man all along and his friend is now really wishing he wasn't and trying to handle feelings that he knows Andrew would be really upset by? What if "Andrew" is actually playing some other flavour of 3d gender chess? I think there's a lot of ways you could take this, from cute and silly/fluffy to much more serious. Have fun!

This song feels a bit insidious, but I suppose it doesn't have to be - Darkness doesn't need to be evil. It could be more of a slow burn building of trust and/or love sort of thing, or commitment to something that they didn't initially understand - a path they didn't meant to follow, rather than a corruption. Or both! But clearly the singer and subject are drawn together and the singer is certain that they will both be tethered to the dark. Are they also tethered together? How/why does the subject get drawn in? Is this like a slippery slope kind of thing? What's the subject's intent, and how does it change? What's the singer's starting point? What's their intent?

Well clearly this is not your average corvid - so what is it? Magpies are know to be collector birds, taking shiny things away to their nests. Is it some kind of fey? It can maybe be dissuaded with crucifixes, but this seems uncertain. Everyone is expecting this creature, and the idea seems to be to take care of yourself now while you can, and also look after what might be left behind. Is going down on all fours about worshipping or supplicating it? IS it more transformational? maybe they themselves turn into the stray cats, I don't know! But I'm also very curious about why the singer thinks that there is nothing left to save at this point. Has the Magpie taken everyone else? or is there something else happening that has drawn it's attention or made them easy victims for it? Was there some crisis that invited this disaster, or left them more vulnerable to it?

Okay so - the opening lines tell us that the singer will only ever love this one "girl". But at the end we also get So stick him in a dress and he's the only boy I'd shag / The only boy I'd anything is Andrew in drag. Singer also describes himself as a ladiesman. So what have we got here - aromantic heterosexual rich guy falls for crossdressing guy? Is that what this is? Or is it something else? And is he right - both that Andrew in drag is the only one for him and that Andrew would never do it again? Could Andrew be into him out of drag but the signer wouldn't reciprocate? I do care about gender for this one. Well, for the singer - do what you will with Andrew. Idk, what if Andrew was a trans man all along and his friend is now really wishing he wasn't and trying to handle feelings that he knows Andrew would be really upset by? What if "Andrew" is actually playing some other flavour of 3d gender chess? I think there's a lot of ways you could take this, from cute and silly/fluffy to much more serious. Have fun!

I was sitting at the edge of the marsh

What's the story - why was he chosen? What did it mean to him? How did he feel? Who is he saying goodbye to - how do they feel about this? Who is the council and why guided their decision? This songs leaves so many questions, which I think is appropriate, but I'd love to hear or see some speculation. I am an archaeologist and love historical details, but I'm not an expert in this period and if you want to take things in another direction that is also cool!
