I love this weird song. It's post-apocalyptic from the narrator's point of view, but everyone else around them is in a bucolic utopia. I'm passionate about cities and sympathize a lot with the narrator, but I could see a story in this setting go in any direction.

This 2007 throwback to INSOC's '80s/'90s heyday feels extremely cyberpunk to me. Very little is said; much is implied. The chorus is totally incongruous with the verses. It leaves me wanting to know more about what links all of these places and events and feelings together.

The band says this song "is about a slightly sleazy couple with a tenuous relationship to each other and a suspect relationship to the world." There's so much potential here for slice-of-life stories, the seeds of destruction planted in the meet-cute, possible futures, strange and surreal AUs... nothing is ever literal in a TMBG song, so I take that as license to run wild with whatever ideas it inspires.

I'm fascinated by this song, which trails away right as it's getting to what should be the heart of it. What does the narrator say on the phone? What happens after the woman in room 502 opens the door? Do they sob on each other about their breakups? Do they have great sex, or terrible unsatisfying sex? Do they go on a road trip together? Do they have a wild "how we met" story to tell at their wedding? What do the last lines of the song mean? And there's plenty of room to interpret the characters just about any way.
